Songs by DAN GUZMAN: “Moby Stank”

Liars, theives, cashing in favors, selling your soul, dropping it down in the desert.  “Moby Stank” is one of DAN GUZMAN’s toughest songs, here played by his old band Hypnotist Collector, with the late Bryan Guzman on bass, Justin Flanigan on drums, and Dan with one of his best guitar rage solos, a solo that mellows into slow-train blues at the end.  The video footage, though, comes from the time another  of his bands, Guzberries, played the song at the Cubby Bear in Chicago.  The video begins with a slow acoustic version of verse one before the Hypnotist Collector version breaks out.

Service at North Central College

North Central College Lead for a Change brochure 4-12On March 19, 2012, we heard that North Central College was once again named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

“The 2012 Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve significant outcomes. North Central College was honored for engaging its students, faculty and staff in meaningful service that achieves measurable results in the community.”  To see a pdf of the full report that appeared on the college’s website, click on the first item in the list below.

“Thousands of service hours,” says the report, “were spent gathering food for distribution centers, which saw a 71 percent drop in government commodities; teaching ESL to refugee students; tutoring and mentoring at-risk K-12 students to raise graduation rates; rebuilding and constructing homes; working in clothing and food pantries; visiting orphans; building relationships with mentally disabled adults; and dancing with residents in an assisted living community.”

The concert venue The Union and the student club SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) have been particularly helpful to our family’s foundation, Emmanuel House, as have other student projects—including many students in the business courses BUS 195 – Entrepreneurial Focus and BUS 197 – Entrepreneurial Experience.  Several times students conducted special money-making projects and gave all they made to us.  One time the whole class engaged in entrepreneurial projects directly benefitting us.  We couldn’t be more proud and thankful!

Below are a list of resources to learn more about the wonderful ethos of service that envelopes this great college.

Guitar by DAN GUZMAN: “What a friend we have in Jesus”

Dan Guzman at The UnionSomething different with DAN GUZMAN.  This time he’s playing lead guitar on an old hymn standard, “What A Friend We Have in Jesus,” featuring the voices of NEDRA GROGGINS-SAGE and TERESA HUBERTY.  Backed by Richard Guzman (keyboards), Mike Feldman (rhythm guitar), Dan Ryan (bass, subbing for regular bassist Leonard Jones), and Nana Wiafe-Abbabio (drums).  The good old days of playing music together as the Praise Band at Friendship United Methodist Church in Bolingbrook, Illinois.
